Western Cape
Important Notice, 25 May 2020:
As the Covid-19 lockdown is still in place, the Western Cape Branch is still unable to have gatherings at meetings or outings. However, following the success of the Western Cape Branch's first Livestreamed presentation in May, our scheduled speakers will present on 9 June, 14 July and 11 August. The Livestreaming is scheduled in our usual slots for 6.30 p.m. (18:30) on those days. We have resumed the notices advertising the titles and abstracts on our events pages of the website as soon as they are available and members will also be notified by e-mail.
In the meantime, you can view the May presentation by Esther Esmyol "Made for Cape tables: ceramic tableware trends in colonial Cape Town" at the following link:

General information on W. Cape branch activities.
Monthly talks on topics of archaeological interest are given on the second Tuesday of the month from February to November. The talks are given at the SA Astronomical Observatory in Observatory. Our speakers are professional archaeologists or specialists in related disciplines. Members gather half an hour before the talk to chat to each other over a glass of sherry. Guests are welcome at our monthly lectures: fee R10 a guest.
Our One Day Lecture series is held annually in conjunction with the Stellenbosch Museum. At this event, four specialists speak on a particular topic. This event is open to the public and is advertised in the press.
We arrange several day outings a year in and around Cape Town for the benefit of our members. Once or twice a year, overnight excursions are arranged to places of archaeological interest out of town. Every now and again we organize an extended excursion to another Province. These are all led by professional archaeologists. We do not participate in digs, although we occasionally visit them by special arrangement with the archaeologists responsible.
The Western Cape branch provides several newsletters a year advertising our activities. These may be received by post or by e-mail.
